When the legendary Finnochio's closed in 1999 after 63 years, the torch was passed to Asia SF. This South of Market hotspot features "gender illusionists" who–when not serving patrons three-star Cal-Asian cuisine and drinks the size of birdbaths–strut the bar/runway with the smolder and sass of pop divas, lip-synching all the way. The decor is dramatic and sensual, with luminous shoji screen walls that change color beneath a midnight blue ceiling. And, while the "girl"-watching is a major draw, Asia SF more than holds its own in San Francisco's competitive culinary scene, earning rave reviews from local critics as well as Wallpaper, Bon Appetit and other national publications. Michael Bauer, restaurant critic for the San Francisco Chronicle, summed it up: "Great food...sexy surroundings...a flashy, fun experience."
