Tucked in a residential area of Hyde Street along the cable car line, you'll find the enchanting Atelier des Modistes. Designer Suzanne Hanley runs this studio/boutique with artist Christopher Farris–whose photographs and sculptures are exhibted throughout the space. Hanley's custom wedding gowns and couture designs begin with luxurious fabrics such as Italian silk satins and shantung, and incorporate vintage French trims and beading using precious and semi-precious stones. Each garment is made with uncommon precision and attention to detail, and Hanley's background as a mechanical engineer assures that her finished creations work in symmetry with the body as well as look beautiful. Her work was even featured in a recent fashion exhibition at SFMOMA. Atelier des Modistes also offers elegant jewelry and unique weddings rings for the non-conventional couple. And they recently began carrying a number of Dutch-designed, Italian-made handbags, and men's accessories including Italian neckties, and wallets fashioned from opulent black stingray and leather.
