Tucked in a courtyard off toney Union Street, this contemporary shop continually wows with its hand-picked selection of the best in European industrial design. Named for a Roman deity of art and architecture, ATYS (pronounced ah-tees) showcases a variety of home, office and fashion accessories, as well as innovative modern furnishings. The ever-changing assortment includes more than enough super-sleek tools and gadgets to outfit the aspiring James Bond. Owner Paul Kerr describes ATYS as "a museum of architecturally designed, well-made objects for everyday use." And, indeed, the labels read like a who's who of contemporary design: Alessi housewares, Tracy Kendall graphic wallpapers, high-performance lighters by Porsche, sunglasses by Phillippe Starck for Alain Mikli, Alfredo Iittala dinnerware and more. And all that inspiration seems to be catching; Kerr himself has entered the design foray with a line of wallets for men and women.
