This is one French flea market that requires neither a passport nor waking up at the crack of dawn. When partners Pierre Moskovtchenko and Marceau Galliot pulled up stakes and headed for the new world, they brought their passion for the golden age of French decorative arts and their extensive collection of quirky antiques with them. Champ de Mars (named for the area of Paris that sits in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower) is conveniently nestled in the heart of Hayes Valley and comfortably crammed with choice linens, jam pots, dog prints, chandeliers, old toys, vintage flatware, country furniture and period ceramics. Drawn to an enameled street sign, you may be distracted on the way by a threadbare-but-charming stuffed terrier and his real-life, tail-wagging counterpart, cheek-by-jowl on a painted wood chair. Such witty juxtapositions are typical of Champ de Mars, and along with the ever-changing inventory, they make each visit a completely new experience.
