More than a century and a half as a literary Mecca has left its mark on San Francisco, in settings made famous by a host of books and in parks, streets and buildings named for a pantheon of authors. But by far The City's most treasured literary landmark is City Lights Bookstore. Founded in 1953 by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Peter D. Martin, this North Beach store was the epicenter of the politically insurgent, artistically rich Beat culture. Today, City Lights is a guiding light among independent booksellers, drawing writers and readers of every stripe who wander happily through mazes of shelves on three rambling floors. The vast selection includes offerings from large and small publishing houses around the world, including more than 200 titles released by City Lights Publishers. The store is open until midnight every night, and signs on the walls encourage browsers to take a seat and readfurther evidence that City Lights is not your run-of-the-mill bookstore.
