With more than 500 historic buildings on 1,480 acres of forests, beaches and some of the most stunning vistas in the world, The Presidio is a sight to behold. And since this former military base became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1994, the first private restaurant to be invited to open in the Presidio is veteran chef Anne Gingrass' Desiree. A home style café serving breakfast and lunch during the week, the menu is born of Gingrass' weekly visits to the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market. Depending on the season, soup and sandwich options might include sweet potato with shrimp bisque, and slow roasted pork and leek with cheddar cheese panini. Dine-in and enjoy the stunning Bay views of the Golden Gate Bridge and eucalyptus groves, or opt for the take-away gourmet lunch box–like a happy meal for adults. Each box includes a green salad, sandwich, local vegetable salad and something sweet and it's the perfect beginning to a picnic. Everything at Desiree is made of fresh and mostly local ingredients, including the lemonade, fresh squeezed juices, and mint and ginger tea. Located in the Film Centre Building in the heart of the Presidio, says the SF Weekly, "It's a perfect place to bring out-of-towners, who'll be impressed with your secret knowledge as you drive them through the Presidio Gates..."
