If there's a center of the Belgian ex-pat universe
of the Bay Area, it might well be Frjtz, a café that relies on the can't-miss combination of good food and artsy ambiance. Owner, resident DJ and mosaic artist Santiago has taken his decorating and culinary cues from the art world. Both Frjtz locations are filled with fun and funky art and the menu items are named for famous artists: the Basquiat is a chicken sandwich on fresh focaccia, the Magritte is a Nutella and banana crepe. Or opt for the signature pommes frites, served in traditional paper cones with wild dipping sauces, like wasabi mayo or curry ketchup. One order with a Belgian beer will pretty much convince you to become an honorary Belgianor at least a loyal Frjtz customer. And check out Santiago's latest: Cama, a Mission-District lounge bar at 3192 16th Street @ Guerrero Street.
