A major contributor to the California pottery movement, Heath Ceramics was facing an uncertain future when industrial designer Catherine Bailey and engineer Robin Petravic stumbled upon the Sausalito workshop and bought it. The legendary manufacturer of dinnerware and architectural tile was founded in 1948 by Edith Heath. Heath, now in her nineties, developed an innovative method of making stoneware with local fine-particle clay and unique matte glazes, keeping production low and quality high. A half-century later, Bailey and Petravic are committed to preserving that legacy. At the same time, they are revitalizing the classic dinnerware lines with fresh colors and accessories, and introducing the work of invited artists. In late 2003, Heath launched its "guest designer" program with a collection of surprising vases by Roy McMakin who playfully omits a section or two of a piece while preserving its functionality. It's this sort of approach–a new twist on a classic idea–that Bailey and Petravic (and Heath before them) keep alive at Heath Ceramics.
