For more than 20 years, loyal patrons have turned to MAC (Modern Appealing Clothing) for the latest innovative fashions from European and American designers. Their trust is well-placed. Brother-and-sister entrepreneurs Ben and Chris Ospital have a knack for finding the next groovy designer or must-have trend, choosing garments that combine an up-to-the-minute sensibility with bohemian flair. Current lines include Dries Van Noten, Dirk Van Saene, Martin Margiela and Walter Van Beirendonck. The boutique's new location in Hayes Valley consolidates the former his-and-hers stores into a single audacious space, complete with sculptures by Ann Weber, a wool garden by Surface Design and "genre-proof" music from local music publisher Asphodel. What hasn't changed is the clothing, free-spirited and expressive as ever. MAC is still getting there first.
