Among San Francisco's most picturesque neighborhoods, Russian Hill is a fitting home for unabashedly romantic, pleasingly whimsical Martin Richards. At the corner of Union and Hyde Street, this shop has walls of Tuscan gold that seem to drink in the sunlight that floods the space by day. Owners Martin Scott and Richard Bohonsky (an accomplished interior designer) have assembled an opulent product assortment that appeals to every sense: for the nose, Carthusia Parfums (made on the Italian isle of Capri since 1380), bath products from Acca Kappa and obsession-inspiring scented candles from Diptyque; for the fingers, Signoria Egyptian cotton bedding and cashmere throws from Anichini; for the eyes, jewel-like lamps and furnishings that lend extraordinary presence to ordinary rooms; for the mouth, exotic chocolates by Jacques Torres, a pastry chef from Le Cirque. And for the ears? They're treated to the merry clatter and clang of the cable cars just outside the shop.
