When they opened their designer-discount boutique in January 2004, Cate Corfman and Suzanne Peterson moved from the fast-paced world of finance to the faster paced world of women's fashion. The pair met while working for a finance firm here in SF, and began to develop the concept for what would become My Roommate's Closet over coffee breaks. At MRC, all clothing is current season, and all prices are at least 50% off retail. How do they do it? By developing relationships with boutiques that carry their favorite designers–Rebecca Taylor, Alvin Valley, Diane Von Furstenberg, and lines like Theory and Chaiken–and purchasing over-buys, extra sizes, and so on. Operating as an outlet for select boutiques, MRC is able to turn merchandise over very quickly, and anything that doesn't sell quickly is discounted an additional 20% to make room for frequent new arrivals. Located on charming Union Street in Cow Hollow, within the plush interior–a converted Victorian–it won't occur to you that you're bargain hunting, until you see the price tags. My Roommate's Closet offers up-to-the-minute fashion direct from the pages of Vogue at bargain basement prices in an elegant environment–what a combination!
