Festooned on the outside by a family of trompe l'oeil monkeys, Paxton Gate is part natural history museum, part art gallery, part gardener's paradise. Think Martha Stewart meets David Lynch, Smith & Hawken on acid. Hand-forged Japanese gardening tools sit cheek-by-jowl with hand-painted glass eyes used for taxidermy and silver necklaces cast from the delicate bones of rats and pelican feet. Ethereal blown glass vases share a table with massive alligator skulls and goat horns. Sean Quigley, the brains and heart of the operation, has taken his fascination with the natural world in every possible direction, stocking his Mission District curiosity shop with exotic epiphytes, orchids and carnivorous plants, mounted insects, taxidermied animals, Ikebana accessories, rare tea and cast iron tea pots, fossils, books and more. At the back, you'll find a serene art gallery and a pond-jeweled garden where you can experience, first-hand, the fruits of Paxton Gate's extensive landscape design and construction services.
