Clement Street has long been known to locals for its veritable U.N. roster of restaurants, but these days it pays to leave ample time before your reservation to browse the wonderful shops that are cropping up. Among the most intriguing newcomers is Period George, dubbed one of the country's "Best New Home Stores" by Lucky Magazine. It's an old-world-feeling shop, with crackle-finish walls of soft gray and sage green, where 18th and 19th century antiques share the shelves (behind rolling library ladders) with new linens and dishware. Owner Donald Gibson traveled the world for years before opening the shop, sending discoveries home from Japan, Indonesia, Australia, western Europe and the Eastern Block countries. While his taste and vision would be perfectly at home in Jackson Square or any of the city's other toney antique rows, the Richmond District was an inspired choice: Period George's global influences, and its focus on dining and entertaining, suit this neighborhood perfectly.
