Located in the former home of Carl's Bakery–which dates back to 1942–Tartine Bakery has established itself as one the premiere bakeries in the Bay Area in just a few years. Tartine is a collaboration between partners and bakers Chad Robertson and Elizabeth Prueitt. The couple started out in Point Reyes with a small business focused on bread; then moved to Mill Valley where they continued to hone their craft before eventually settling into their Mission District digs. Chad's a master breadmaker, and he bakes directly on the hearth of an Italian-imported brick oven. The 'bien cuit' bread becomes the foundation for savory menu items including croque monsieur, and pain au Jambon–made with gruyere cheese and Niman Ranch ham. Elizabeth is an award winning pastry chef (recently named Pastry Chef of the Year by San Francisco Magazine) whose fresh fruit tarts–lemon verbena and rose geranium– are quickly becoming legendary. At Tartine, everything is made from scratch, and everything is made on the premises of natural, organic, and mostly local farm ingredients. Even the Cottage flowers around the Café–and garnishing the tarts–are grown just down the street. To top it off, there's a wine bar featuring a dozen wine offerings available by the glass. [Note that cakes and tarts are not available on Monday, and bread is not available on Monday and Tuesday.]
