Owner Ken Zankel has taken the "communal living room" concept of the English pub and reimagined it with a distinctly San Francisco swing. If you like your chicken pot pie with wireless DSL, this is the place for you. Filled with a rustic assemblage of plank tables and old Napa movie theatre seats, The Grove serves hearty, homey food ranging from apple chicken salad to housemade Sloppy Joes to sauce-and-cheese-smothered enchiladas. The bar features a nice selection of micro-brewed beers and wines by the glass, and chess boards are available upon request. No part of the atmosphere has been overlooked, including the acoustics. Owner Ken Zankel draws from his personal collection of over 2,000 CDs to play everything from old Blues to John Coltraine, to rare/unreleased music you're not likely to hear anywhere else. From inside you can observe street activity through 40 feet of huge windows; on sunny days grab a table outside and watch the parade of people shopping, walking dogs, and pushing strollers up and down Fillmore Street. Or order a latte and settle into one of the overstuffed leather couches beside the fireplace, a cozy spot to sip and chat (online or in person) when the fog rolls in.
